Royal Pardon Ends Remaining Sentence for Former Thai Leader Thaksin
According to reports, Thaksin had been scheduled to complete his sentence on Sept. 9, 2026, and was serving the final stage of his punishment while under parole supervision.
The release was made possible under the 2026 Royal Decree on Royal Pardons, which allows certain parolees with less than one year remaining on their sentences to qualify for early release, provided they do not fall into categories excluded from the measure.
Justice Minister Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat said the pardon allows for the immediate removal of Thaksin’s electronic monitoring device. However, local authorities must still finalize administrative procedures required to formally implement the decree.
The decision marks the end of all remaining parole requirements imposed on Thaksin after his return to Thailand in August 2023, following a lengthy period of self-imposed exile abroad.
A dominant and often divisive figure in Thai politics for decades, Thaksin returned to the country and began serving a prison sentence related to corruption convictions. His original punishment was later reduced through royal clemency.
After serving eight months of a one-year sentence, he was granted parole and required to comply with supervision conditions, including regular reporting requirements and the use of an electronic monitoring bracelet.
The latest royal pardon removes those remaining restrictions several months before the scheduled completion of his sentence.
Thaksin remains one of the most influential figures in modern Thai politics, with his return, legal proceedings and subsequent release continuing to attract significant public and political attention across the country.
