Thailand’s Ex-PM Freed as Royal Pardon Wipes Out Remaining Sentence

(MENAFN) Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been fully released from the remaining terms of his prison sentence following a royal pardon, ending legal restrictions that had been in place since his return to the country nearly three years ago.

Justice Minister Lt. Gen. Ruttapol Naowarat confirmed the development Wednesday, with local media reporting the decision grants Thaksin immediate relief from parole conditions — including the removal of an electronic monitoring bracelet he had been required to wear.

The release stems from the 2026 Royal Decree on Royal Pardons, which stipulates that parolees with fewer than 12 months left on their sentence qualify for full discharge, provided they do not fall under any disqualifying categories. Thaksin had been on course to complete his sentence on September 9 this year.

While the ankle bracelet can be removed at once, Ruttapol noted that provincial administrative bodies must still carry out procedural formalities to fully implement the decree, according to the media.

The pardon formally erases all remaining parole obligations months ahead of schedule — drawing a legal close to a chapter that began in August 2023, when Thaksin touched down in Thailand after years of self-imposed exile, only to begin serving a prison term immediately upon arrival.

That sentence was subsequently reduced through royal clemency. He was released on parole after eight months of a one-year term, subject to regular reporting requirements and electronic monitoring. Wednesday's decree eliminates those final conditions entirely.

One of Southeast Asia's most consequential and divisive political figures, Thaksin had originally been convicted in corruption-related cases tied to his time in power.
