Cambodia, Thailand disagree on venue for talks amid ongoing clashes
In a letter to Thai Defense Minister General Nattaphon Narkphanit, Cambodian Defense Minister General Tea Seiha proposed relocating the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting to Kuala Lumpur for safety reasons, noting that Malaysia has agreed to host the session. “For security reasons, due to the ongoing fighting along the border, this meeting should be held in a safe and neutral venue,” he wrote.
Thailand rejected the proposal, with Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirming the GBC meeting will proceed on Wednesday in Chanthaburi province. The venue dispute comes after ASEAN foreign ministers met in Kuala Lumpur on Monday to discuss the border tensions, with both sides previously agreeing in principle to resume GBC talks. The last session was held in Cambodia’s Koh Kong province in September.
Meanwhile, clashes continue along the border. Thai forces reported ongoing engagements across four northeastern provinces, while Cambodia claimed Thai artillery strikes hit its territory.
Casualty figures vary: Thailand reported 21 soldiers and one civilian killed, with 33 additional civilian deaths, while Cambodia confirmed 21 civilian deaths and 83 injuries.
China has advised its citizens to avoid the border region, citing a “severe security situation,” after a Chinese national was injured in Cambodia during the fighting. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged both nations to protect the safety and rights of Chinese citizens and businesses in the area.
