UN Chief calls for restraint amid Cambodia-Thailand border clashes

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed serious concern on Monday over the resurgence of armed confrontations between Cambodia and Thailand, urging both governments to exercise caution and prevent the situation from escalating further, according to reports.

“The Secretary-General is concerned by reports of renewed armed clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, particularly the reported airstrikes and mobilization of heavy equipment in the border area. He urges both parties to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation,” said a statement issued by Guterres’ spokesperson.

The ongoing conflict has already caused extensive civilian casualties, infrastructure damage, and displacement on both sides of the border, reports indicate. Guterres emphasized that civilians must be protected and humanitarian aid should be allowed to reach those affected as the tensions threaten to worsen.

Reiterating his call for calm, Guterres encouraged both countries to adhere to the framework established in the Joint Declaration signed in Kuala Lumpur on October 26. He further urged them to “recommit to the ceasefire, and implement de-escalation and confidence-building measures,” while using existing dialogue channels to resolve disputes peacefully.

“The United Nations stands ready to support all efforts aimed at promoting peace, stability, and development in the region,” the statement added.

The border tensions intensified last month after Thailand suspended de-escalation measures following a landmine incident in Si Sa Ket province, which injured four Thai soldiers. Previously, in October, the two nations had signed a peace agreement in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of US and Malaysian leaders. Earlier in July, a trilateral meeting hosted by Malaysia had established an unconditional ceasefire following weeks of heavy hostilities.
